Tanami Desert Plane Crash Scenario

Post by MasterChief » Sun Jan 07, 2018 5:33 pm

Australia's third largest desert, the Tanami Desert covers 184,500sq.km across Western Australia and the Northern Territory.

You and your 6 companions have just survived the crash of a light plane. The pilot was killed in the crash.

It is mid-January , and you are in Tanami Desert (See map below).

Your task is to survive and define which 5 things you would take with you and how they would be useful. You can choose to go it alone and leave the group or stick together.

You are all dressed in city clothes appropriate for a business meeting. Your group of survivors managed to salvage the following items:
  • A ball of steel wool
  • A small ax
  • A loaded .223 rem
  • Can of SPAM
  • Newspapers (one per person)
  • Cigarette lighter (without fluid)
  • Extra shirt and pants for each survivor
  • 2m x2m piece of heavy-duty canvas
  • A sectional air map made of plastic
  • One litre of 100-proof whiskey
  • A compass
  • Chocolate bars (one per person)

Post your responses to which 5 items from the list you would take to survive and how they would be useful.

I'd keep the loaded .223 rem, extra shorts and pants, 2mx2m canvas, whiskey and chocolate bars

Here's why
  1. A loaded .223 rem - Shoot and kill anything edible, PLUS a noise maker and could use the The international distress signal of
3 shots fired in rapid succession, but could be used as a hammer.
Some risk as rescue is delayed that tension in the group could rise and having a loaded weapon amongst it all could be fatal and /or a power struggle could erupt to get possession of the rifle.
  2. Extra shirt and pants for each survivor - Used fir creating shelter, bedding, bandages, string (when unraveled), and fuel for the fire.
  3. 2m x2m piece of heavy-duty canvas - Shelter against sun, wind rain, ground cover and its EXACT shape means itl'll look un-natural
  4. One litre of 100-proof whiskey - Empty bottle used to store water, start fires, treat any wounds as an antiseptic.
  5. Chocolate bars (one per person) - mostly carb so energy without a massive digestive demand on the body.

The comment you made on the power struggle for the rifle....That would be one of the major problems I see if and when the SHTF .
Everyone likes to hear the sound of their own voice these days, and thinks only they know all the answers and It would be their way or the highway....Give me that GUN!You know what I mean?

Anyway Chief to give my reply....Lets see..(for protection)...The tarp. For water we need map and compass to find water holes if any and hoped they are marked.(water)...Rifle for hunting food.....Proof whisky for wounds and for a night sip to warm the cockles as it gets freezing of a night in the desert .

Thats a good list it would be hard to leave any of them behind really....If the group were all doing the trek, all the items would be coming.:)

Why would you leave the plane, its what the rescue team would be looking for,
not idiots wandering around the desert,
and with the tarp, and wreckage a shade could be built, now obviously there was no fire,
which means there will be at least some fuel and defiantly oil within the engine, as well as the seating within, which have foam and cloth coverings they need to be ripped out and any other burnable material (you have the axe to help do this)
at least three locations must be selected for fires, preferably high, and close to the plane,
this way you have three signals in case one is missed,
as the plane would have an electrical system so two wires from the battery could be used to short some of the wire wool to start a fire, using bits of the news paper, if no fuel is left sadly you would have to use the whiskey to make sure the fire took hold in you signal areas.
now sit back in the shade and eat your chocolate bars, and select a none drinker to guard the whiskey with the rifle .
as a rescue will be coming soon, as there is no way you would walk out of that desert without water.
and the plane and the signal fires will assure your rescue.

Providing people know your trip, and you inform them of your arrival (which you fail to keep) they will look for you. and the first thing they look for is what you were traveling in, and the planned route. even with a compass, unless you knew exactly were you were, you could be hundreds of miles off
on a heading that you think is right.

Simple, you keep everything because you stay with the plane.
