the facts:

In Queensland, police say pepper spray is an "offensive weapon" and can't be carried for self-defenceIn NSW, it's a "prohibited weapon" and can't be carried for personal securityIn Victoria, it's illegal to "carry any article designed or adapted to discharge an offensive, noxious or irritant liquid, powder, gas or chemical so as to cause disability, incapacity or harm to another person", including for self-defenceIn Tasmania, people must not carry "dangerous articles" in public places unless they have a lawful excuse (which doesn't include self-defence)In South Australia, pepper spray is considered a "dangerous article" and is prohibitedIn the Northern Territory, it's a "prohibited weapon" and there's no self-defence exception in the legislationIn the ACT, pepper spray is considered a "prohibited weapon", making it an offence to possess or use it

What I find hard to understand is that you have not familiarized yourself with the law.

Whilst it is illegal, as you say, to possess anything for the purpose of self defence it is not illegal to use anything for self defence if such defence is proved to be lawful.
I think that's part of the problem. Home invader enters your home, threatens you, you shoot home invader. The onus is now completely on you to prove that you acted in self defence, that your response was proportional to the threat and that you had no other choice. You'll be asked to prove why you had time to go to your gun safe, and why that was the only option for you.
Protecting your property is not an adequate reason for this.
Actual convictions for this kind of thing are rare, but do you really want to immediately be in the spotlight (with potentially horrific consequences for you) over an incident that someone else instigated?

The chances are that you will still lose your firearms & have your license revoked. One bloke is in prison after choking to death an intruder he found in his child daughter's bedroom!!!
This is about the government's attitude towards citizen welfare. Domestic violence is rife in Australia, & the law protects the offender! The government has even cut funding to women's help centers & has closed some down! How can this sort of thing be justified, why do the majority of people allow this to happen?!

A friend of mine made that exact same point. Every single day a woman is severely beaten/raped as a part of domestic violence. Women will never be able to defend physically against men, so the only possible way to protect is to allow self defence.

Nobody in their right mind wants to see this 'open carry' rubbish, but a can of mace in the handbag or an accessible 22 in a room you can lock yourself in whilst calling police might just save some lives.

We have that in our own families, but cannot control others who do not value women as equals the way we do. The sensible approach is to allow them to protect themselves agains such ruffians.

So how do you do that?

Anything you make legal for self defence is then available to the perp!

No benefit to the victim just plain escalation yes simple but stupid as well
