Alcohol for barter?

Post by Benchwarmer » Tue Jan 16, 2018 3:15 pm

Does any one here store booze or make it as a part of preps? If so how much do you think is a reasonable amount? Not asking about the legalities of it ...

I don't store booze, but I have a carton of smokes. Smokers will give you pretty much anything as a trade for a pack of durries. I'm a smoker so I know the lengths you'll go to for a smoke.
Let's put it this way, you'll never have a bloke come up to you and ask for a scull of your beer, but a smoker will always ask to bum a smoke.

Yes but growing tobacco will find you in much more strife then making booze. Moonshine can run a car, a diesel (with other ingredients ) and chainsaws tractors even

Alcohol can also be useful medicinally, we will reach a scenario fairly soon where there are more super multiresistant bugs than there are antibiotics to deal with them so ETOH will be valueable.
Also, when the SHTF people like to drink to cope with their sorrows (look at Greece for an example) so yeah, I reckon alcohol would be a useful barter item

I carry a bottle of rum, but not for barter.

I’ve been home distilling for many years as a hobby not so much as a perp but I could see it being valuable as a trade currency. I’m sure there’s many of that would like a drink when shtf.
Plus if your distilling your self there can be many uses for alcohol can be a fuel source a disinfectant made in to a rube for mussel pains the list goes on an on.
My self personally plan on laying low not been seen nore thought about enjoying A quiet rum my self I use to think of things to have on hand for trade than I changed my way of thinking An prepping to more being self reliant not needing to trade.

Not saying I don’t have a few things to trade I do I just don’t plan on having to.

I've been thinking the same thing. During my army days, towards the end of an excersize the smokers usually ran out. Sometimes an enterprising soul would profit from the situation. Not well regarded, but profitable nonetheless.

Yes. Bartering items of all sorts will be valuable.

If you were stocking provisions, then stock lots of cheap liquor.

- No need to buy top shelf if using it for barter. But have it stocked.
- Overproof liquor could also be used for Molitov cocktails. Defence and Offence.
- Can be used to disinfect wounds and surgical implements
- Liquor Has no shelf life

Cigarettes - Just another form of currency. If you travel, buy duty free and stock up

Finally Honey.

Learn how to be an apiarist and store the honey. Sugar is just another addiction that will serve well in these times as a valuable bartering weapon.

having a still or homebrew set up would be good for longer term shtf, for reasons other than trade. being able to store and extend the life of your produce and for reasons above are pretty compelling.

I have lots of salt, pepper, sugar, honey, jam, vegemite, buiscuits in single servings that I would use to barter. I would also plan to trade fish and small game.
